Jean-Claude Van Damme's journey to martial arts mastery

At the age of eleven, Jean-Claude Van Damme joined the National Karate Center under Claude Goetz in Belgium. He devoted four years to rigorous training, earning a place on the Belgian karate team. Later, he continued his training in Full Contact Karate and Kickboxing under the supervision of Dominique Valera.

At the age of fifteen, Van Dam entered the world of professional karate competition in Belgium. From 1976 to 1980, he compiled an impressive record of 44 wins and 4 losses in non-contact championship matches.

Van Dam was an important member of the Belgian karate team when they were victorious in the European Karate Cup on 26 December 1979 in Brussels.

He placed second in the Coupe des Espoirs Karate Challenge (1 trial). Over the course of the three-day tournament, Van Dam defeated 25 opponents before surrendering in the final to teammate Angelo Spataro.
