the story:

On the last day of British rule in Hong Kong, Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) of the Hong Kong Police Force raids a shipping dock in an attempt to arrest the mysterious crime boss, Lord Juntao. However, he only finds Sang (Ken Leung), Juntao's right-hand man, who manages to escape. However, Inspector Li succeeds in recovering a number of stolen Chinese cultural treasures, a triumph that serves as a farewell to his departing superiors: Chinese Consul Solon Han (Tzi Ma) and British Commander Thomas Griffin (Tom Wilkinson).

Shortly after Han arrives in the United States to take up his new diplomatic posting in Los Angeles, his daughter, Soo-young, is kidnapped by Sang on her way to her first day of school. The FBI reports the incident to Consul Han, prompting Inspector Lee to assist in the case.
The FBI decides to marginalize Lee by removing him from the police station and assigning surveillance duties to James Carter (Chris Tucker).

However, Carter takes matters into his own hands when he discovers that he has been assigned a pointless mission. Carter meets Lee at LAX, takes him on a tour of the city, and tries to immerse him in the nightlife. However, Lee escapes from Carter, goes to the Chinese embassy, and meets the consul there, who is waiting with a group of agents for news of his kidnapped daughter.

Carter unwittingly becomes involved in the case when he accidentally engages the kidnapper in a phone call, who demands a $50 million ransom. The FBI traces the call, sends a team to the warehouse from which the call originated,

But it turns out to be a trap, leading to an explosion that kills the attacking team. It is revealed that Sang is approaching the site of the explosion, leading to a confrontation between him, Lee, and Carter. Sang manages to escape, but the bomb maker is found by Lee and Carter. Carter calls his friend, an explosives expert, who leads them to bomb maker Clive, whom Carter had previously arrested.
