The Hunger Games (2012)

The Hunger Games is a 2012 American science fiction dystopian action film directed by Gary Ross. It is based on the first novel in the "Hunger Games" series by Suzanne Collins. The film is produced by Nina Jacobson and John Kilik, and features an ensemble cast, including Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland. Ross, Collins, and Billy Ray collaborated on the screenplay. The film marks the beginning of "The Hunger Games" film series, set in a bleak post-apocalyptic future.

the story

The story revolves around 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who lives in the nation of Panem, which consists of the wealthy Capitol and the 12 poor districts surrounding it. Katniss resides in District 12 with her mother and younger sister, Prim. When Prim is chosen to participate in the Hunger Games—an annual competition in which a boy and a girl from each district compete to the death as punishment for past rebellion—Katniss volunteers to take her place. Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) is also chosen from District 12, and they both travel to the Capitol to prepare for the fierce competition, accompanied by the winner of the 50th Hunger Games, Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson).

 "The Hunger Games" takes place in a dark future world where the nation of Panem emerges after North America is destroyed in mysterious events. Panem consists of the rich Capitol and 12 poor districts that live under the rule and exploitation of the Capitol. As punishment for the previous attempted rebellion in the region, the annual "Hunger Games" are held, in which a boy and a girl from each region compete to the death.

  Events:

- Katniss and Peeta's Choice: Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12, volunteers to take her sister Prim's place in the Hunger Games after being chosen. Peeta Mellark, the baker's son who helped Katniss in the past, is chosen from the same area.

- Preparation and TV Show: Katniss and Peeta are transported to the Capitol with their mentor Haymitch Abernathy, the previous victor. They appear before the public, give television interviews, and present their supposed relationship. Preparations for the Games are intensifying and tensions are rising.

-The beginning of the games: The games begin, and many kings are killed on the first day. Peeta forms an alliance with the Well-Wishers, while Katniss allies with the young girl, Rue. They face great challenges in the arena.

- Rule Changes: One of the rules of the games was changed after the discovery of a supposed romantic relationship between Katniss and Peeta. It becomes possible for two players from the same region to win together.

- Alliance with Thresh and her death: Katniss allies with the young girl Thresh, but Thresh dies at the hands of the job tribute. Katniss and Peeta team up to face new challenges and deadly creatures.

- Confrontation with Cato: They reach the final confrontation with Cato, which is a powerful professional tribute. A huge battle ensued, and they succeeded in defeating Cato after a fierce struggle.

- Katniss and Peeta's Victory:While the Gamemakers announce a new rule allowing honorees from the same district to win, Katniss and Peeta choose joint suicide to avoid repercussions on their families.

  Development and release:

Development of the film began in March 2009 when Lionsgate Entertainment entered into a production agreement with Color Force. Collins collaborated with Ross and Ray on the screenplay. The script expanded the character of Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley) to convey many of the developments directly to the audience, and Ross added additional scenes between Seneca Crane and Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland). The principal cast was cast between March and May 2011, and filming took place from May to September 2011 in North Carolina.

The film premiered on March 21, 2012 in some European countries, followed by a release in the United States and the United Kingdom on March 23, 2012, in both traditional and IMAX theaters. It had an impressive opening day of $67.3 million and a total of $152.5 million in its first week, making it the fourth-highest opening weekend in North America at the time, behind "The Avengers" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2." And "The Dark Knight." “The Hunger Games” has held the No. 1 spot in North America for four consecutive weeks, a feat not seen since “Avatar.” The film's global box office success grossed $694 million against its $78 million budget, making it the third highest-grossing film in the United States and the ninth highest-grossing film of 2012.

"The Hunger Games" received positive reviews from critics, who praised its themes, messages, and Jennifer Lawrence's portrayal of Katniss. Some criticism has been directed at the use of shaky camera work, especially in the action scenes, and comparisons to other works in the genre. The film's soundtrack, including Taylor Swift's "Safe & Sound" ft. The Civil Wars, won a Grammy Award and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Jennifer Lawrence won the Saturn Award for Best Actress, the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in an Action Movie, and the Empire Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress.
